It is a fairly good, very quick read. If you are into cyberpunk/posthumanism/transhumanism sci-fi. Although the 'cyber punk' label may be a bit misleading. It is a very good example of it in my opinion, but it does have a bunch of shadowy hackers running around. The more obvious cyberpunk tropes are there, but are very downplayed and there is almost no action in it and next to no actual violence.

I really liked the story and some of the characters. Sterling's vision for a future society is also very interesting. Age extension techniques are very advance and the economy centers around medical technology and prolonging life as opposed to just enjoying the time you have.

If you are a fan, I would recommend it. It is not nearly as good as Schismatrix, but I still enjoyed it and will probably re-read it at some point.

    Not bad.
I liked how there was *no* privacy ...your urine was uploaded to google hourly or whatever.

Theres a Bruce Sterling thread back there somewhere...in the arcane dusty storage of Tribe's 'i just finished reading...' storage thingy.
    :)

Bruce Sterlings *ideas* are top shelf... although his execution of a believable plot or characters are not what people *usually* rave about after reading his books. Still I loved Schismatrix also and have whole paragraphs outlined. He's like Tom Robbins in these ways...at least to me.

Having said that I've read (probably) everything the man has done and even enjoyed a few of his lectures online.

Here's one of his more lucid videos:

and heres some other neat stuff to listen to as you do the dishes etc.

Hes such a dorky kind of nerd.

    i love 'im.

BTW wouldn't Schismatrix be a good movie?

quick note, my original post should read "but it does NOT have a bunch of shadow hackers..." Just to clear up confusion for anyone who hasn't read it.

Onward. Thanks for the links, I haven't check them out yet, but they are bookmarked for later perusal. Sterling's ideas are definitely stronger then his writing. I have only read Holy Fire, Schismatrix and a collection of short stories. (and Difference Engine, but we can just all agree that book does exist, right?) I feel much the same way about PKD, but Sterling is usually far more coherent then PKD. Perhaps a bit less inspired at times too though.

I'm not sure Schismatrix would make a good movie. I think it could, but it would have to have a huge budget and be at least three or four hours long or a trilogy. I just think the massive scope and time line of it would be difficult to translate to film, and I think watching the change and evolution of human civ, culture and tech and how it effects attitudes, politics and lifestyle is the key to that book. The characters are decent, but they are not horribly identifiable or sympathetic, the vision of the future he describes is definitely what drives it. The fact that he does almost all of it through normal story events too and has very little exposition makes it wonderful. I hate lengthy exposition.
