"I, Lucifer" by Glen Duncan, is one of the funniest and most clever books I've read in a long time. Read it a few years ago. I think I'll put it on my reread list.
It is about a British writer who attempts suicide, and a deal is struck where Satan gets to occuppy his body and live as a mortal human, on a trial basis. God gives Satan a second chance, to see if he can behave himself while occupying a human body.
It either is now a movie or is about to be released. The movie will probably suck, as do most film adaptations of any book that had literary qualities.

Thu, June 11, 2009 - 6:16 AMGood.
By the way, this isn't goth, vampire literature, sci-fi, Ann Rice or any of that.
It's a work of humor. Very British, very contemporary, and very literary. -

Thu, June 11, 2009 - 6:18 AMIt's brilliant. Read it a few years ago. Didn't konw they were making it into a film tho, not sure how that would translate. -

Thu, June 11, 2009 - 7:30 AMI entirely expect the film to be awful. They'll probably Americanize it, and it will be all downhill from there. -

Re: I, Lucifer, by Glen Duncan
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 7:36 AMDo you have any idea on the actors in it? I think it would depend a lot on that. It needs to stay thoroughly british or really could be awful.
I imagine they'd have to have a narrator speak out the character's thoughts, as most of the book is really the satan's observations that make it so funny. They'd have to do 'flashbacks' to the garden of eden and stuff like that otherwise. It could be really really awful if they do that. I don't trust film makers with great books. They mess them up consistently. -

Thu, June 11, 2009 - 8:09 AMHmmm, how about John Malkovich? I think he would play a good Lucifer incarnate.
But I have not read the book so I don't really know how Glen Duncan painted his character.
The novel does sound intriguing. -

Re: I, Lucifer, by Glen Duncan
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 8:26 AMMalkovich is too old for that character, and a bit too odd. The character who Lucifer comes to inhabit is a bit more ordinary, just a depressed British writer, kind of a schmuck. A younger and British verision of John Cusack would be ideal. -
