Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs was the story of his actual horrific childhood. His humor made it definitely quick flowing. I loved it so much that I'm currently reading his second book "Dry"
Falling Leaves: The Memoir of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter by Adeline Yen Mah was amazing and sad at the same time. I can't believe she lived through as much as she did the first time around, let alone living through it again while writing it. Parts of it made me cry... Loved it.

Re: Running With Scissors AND Falling Leaves
Sun, August 16, 2009 - 11:16 AMLoved everything by Augusten Burroughs including his one fiction book. They only one that I had to stop reading was his last one, A Wolf at the Table. I just couldn't do it.
If you like Burroughs, try David Sedaris. -

Mon, August 17, 2009 - 9:27 AMWhat do you mean, you couldn't do it? Troubling?
His first "sexual" (rape) experience in Running With Scissors was sure disturbing.

Fri, August 21, 2009 - 6:52 AMOh yeah, David Sedaris is great.
It seems like he used to be on NPR all the time (or just This American Life?... something in the morning too...)
I love his voice/delivery.
Here's his famous story about working as Crumpet the Elf for a mall Santa:

Re: Running With Scissors AND Falling Leaves
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 9:10 AMRWS movie is not a good adaptation. The actor is too old to pass off as a 14 year old. I watched it with my hubby who hasn't read the book and he said he felt like he kept missing something so as a movie, it missed, and as an adaptation it definitely missed. The crazy sister who loves her cat so much she kills it and Annette Benning as his mom were the only notable performances, but still.. not that great. I probably watched it too soon after reading the book because I had a hard time with the missing elements that naturally get dropped to make a book into a 2 hour movie. -

Mon, October 5, 2009 - 12:39 PMI love Burroughs' comment "I myself am made up entirely of faults, stitched together with good intentions." - I know it is true for me.
If you enjoy Running With Scissors you might also enjoy "The Naked Civil Servant" by Quentin Crisp it is from two generations ago and a different world.
