Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Sun, May 24, 2009 - 6:23 AMI guess it depends what you think is trashy. I'm really interested in finding out about women writers (the trends in their writing). Because of that, I read almost anything I can find written by women except flat out formula romance *trash* and mysteries. So, I've read many novels that were pretty formulaic, woman experiences major setback, starts over, makes new friends, maybe finds a new romantic partner, and lives happily ever after. Is that what you mean by trashy? -

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Sun, May 24, 2009 - 10:08 AMNo. I think, the trashiest book I have ever read may have been the second or third (or 5th?) sequel to "Ayla and the clan of the cave bear" (was probably called "The valley of the horses") when the time came where her editor had decided that this series sells well and the author should keep reproducing more of the same but spice it up with a bit of pornography to reach a wider clientele, so we got blow jobs in mountain caves with prehistoric horses running around outside and darts and arrows waiting in the corner by the hearth fire. ; )
But no, anything predictable and main stream bores me. I do enjoy juicy fat novels though, the kind that keep you up all night, like anything by James Clavell.

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Sun, May 24, 2009 - 4:26 PMI think by "trashy" I just meant regular bestseller type books - not bodice rippers or anything....
I was just searching thru the titles listed of late and thinking it looks more like a university reading list. I wondered if it's just that people only list their "smart books" and hide their enjoyment of more popular fare. -

Sun, May 24, 2009 - 6:13 PMThe elegance of the hedgehog IS a bestseller.
One that does not insult your intelligence if you have some, though. ; ) On the contrary.

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Sun, May 24, 2009 - 7:35 PMWould Angels & Demons fall into this mainstream, trashy category? It is definitely formulaic, simply written -not necessarily bad - and has quite a number of overt sexual references that seem out of place to me. I find the references to the main female character, Vittoria, to be incredibly objectifying and frankly dull. Are there ever any average or plain women in these types of novels?
If it falls into this category, then yes, I do read trashy novels. I am not all about Dostoyevsky, Tolstoi, Joyce.....etc. etc. They don't necessarily go well when curled up on the couch with a nice glass of fine wine or trashy wine depending on how altered you want your consciousness to be:-)
I also recently read Pillars of the Earth. While I enjoyed the story for the most part (my husband and I read it out loud to each other while taking several long driving trips) it also had these insertions - no pun intended - of a sexual nature. They seemed very out of place within the context of the storyline. IMO.
What have you all thought of either Angels & Demons or Pillars of the Earth? I would enjoy hearing others thoughts.....Renee -

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Sun, May 24, 2009 - 9:15 PMI have read many a trashy novel.
Mainly gay pulp and stuff but also the sundry and flyspecked Clive Barker, Celestine Prophesies and such I find at the freebie rack in the library.
'Who took my Cheese', 'Tuesdays with Morrie', yeeees Clan of the Cave Bear too!
(My friend listened to the audio book of that last one and she told me that they were grunting and really acting it out. How funny.) -

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Sun, May 24, 2009 - 9:27 PMI could not get through Clan of the Cave Bear series, serious pulp there. -

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Sun, May 24, 2009 - 9:31 PMI've been stuck in some pretty grueling circumstances where *any* book was a distraction.

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Sun, May 24, 2009 - 9:35 PMoh yeah, I hear that. We should start a list of the worst books we've read, but I've blocked them out. (the horror, the horror). -

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 12:27 AMok, worst books, um...
Let's say most disappointing books?
I used to love and respect Erica Jong but when I read "Any woman's blues", putting up with her descriptions of the heroine's premenopausal depression and drinking binges and how she found a bottle of cheap Charlie's perfume in her younger boyfriend's bed- at the point where I got to the chapter with her description of a sadomasochistic dungeon designed to relieve the imbearable boredom of the rich artsy crowd of NYC, and how she shoved the wrong end of a whip up someone's ass during her visit there, I called it a day. Never touched the book again, it is still sitting on my shelf but when I look at it, I recall that moment of nausea and revulsion... Get a hold of yourself, Erica, I want to say.... -

Mon, May 25, 2009 - 9:21 AMOne person's trash is another person's treasure!
Yes, I have read what some of you deem to consider trashy novels. -

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 9:51 AMAs I said, I enjoyed the first sequel of Ayla and the clan.., i loved most of Erica Jong's book and just think she goes off the deep end sometims. Stuff that I consider trash from the beginning I do not usually touch, unless I am on holiday, somewhere desperately bored on a beach with nothing to do and depending on the paperbacks left in the dining room or something.
There is only one book that I chucked into the trash (after 20 pages) and that was "Almost transparent blue" by Ryu Murakami. He is famous, received a literature prize in Japan, but I could not take it. -

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 1:54 PMI also enjoyed the first (and second) sequel of Clan of the Cave Bear. The second book being my favorite of the three. It's the later sequels that get a little boring, but I still would not classify them as "trashy".
In answer to the original question, I do not read trashy books. I only have time for the good ones. -

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 3:04 PMI have read all of the clan books except the last one, don't know why. But I suppose one day I will read them again back to back.
And yes, I am known to wile away an afternoon in the hammock with a Judith kranz, Mistral's Daughter is my favourit.

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 6:14 AMWell I read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, so I guess you could say I read a lot of trashy fiction. Fantasy especially tends to be formulaic and poorly written for the most part. Some of it is very heavy too, but some of it is straight up pulp. When I have to work in the field I spend a large amount of time sitting in my truck punctuated by brief intervals of actually doing work so I tend to read lite stuff on those days.
Everything I read I read for enjoyment. I happen to enjoy some serious nonfiction and some more 'high brow' literature, but I don't read a book just because I think it will make me look smart.

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Tue, May 26, 2009 - 8:45 AMIt depends on what's trashy...to me it's those silly romance novels that are really over the top.I read it for the laughs and absurdness. So yeah,I'm guilty of that.True Crime novels, stuff like that. The more sordid and unbelievable the better. -

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Tue, May 26, 2009 - 9:43 AMThere was a bodice ripping trash novel lying around in the pub where we have our montly poetry readings. We read it paragraphs of it to eachother just for kicks. Some unbelievable plot about a virtuous young woman meeting an exotic man in her office who turns out to have gypsy blood and finds herself in the throes of passion compelled to cheat on her rich fiance, blablabla...The wording was also unbelievable, a mindbending mix of banalities, run down idioms with stolen metaphors thrown in and phrases trying to appear "sophisticated and unusual". The only thing I remember is our poetry moderator hopping around the pub, exclaiming:"Did you hear this? 'She breathlessly gazed into his whisker-shadowed face'? WHAT? 'His whisker shadowed face'? Can you believe this?" and we were laughing our heads off. 'We' means the crazy English poets of Tokyo. ; )
I think, you would like this one, Jaguar Moon.

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Tue, May 26, 2009 - 12:09 PMGuilty as Charged. My secret trash novels range from Nora Roberts to Jean Auel to Mary Higgens Clark. I don't like the hard-core "bodice rippers", but close enough. When I need a break from serious intellectual reading, I reach for the brain candy.

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Tue, May 26, 2009 - 1:34 PMEvery now and then I'll read some ancient science fiction book from the sixties or seventies. You know, something no one you know has ever heard of, it's falling apart and you get it from some garage sale for twenty five cents. I love those things, they never make any sense, and they're always so preachy. Other than that, I normally don't read anything really trashy, the writing just gets kind of boring. -

Re: Does anyone ever read trashy books?
Sat, June 6, 2009 - 11:45 AMI have to start this with a disclaimer because I usually hate trashy novels, just like I hate trashy movies...
I did however, recently become addicted to the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris, at the behest of a friend whom usually has decent taste. These books I believe, are the epitome of smut, however they are good for a laugh and so easy to breeze through since I don't have to worry about things like: plot, tying up loose ends, character development, or decent grammar. -

Wed, June 10, 2009 - 5:43 AMI agree, that series is loads of fun! Not quite as trashy as the Laurell K Hamilton business - but a good bit of fluff!
