Thu, April 20, 2006 - 4:52 PMDeath is my favorite, but there's a huge improvement chonologically. The newer stuff is more polished, he's learned more craft.

Re: THUD!
Fri, April 28, 2006 - 4:21 PMThe books to a greater or lesser extent are stand alones--although it's nice to know the characters as they develope from book to book. However his first few are a little rough (he himself admits that it wasn't until #3 or 4 that he managed to get a plot) Equal Rites might serve as an early one that's not too rough. Or Mort, perhaps. Going Postal, The Truth, Moving Pictures and Small Gods are all stand alone with some of the recurring characters in the background.
Or you can start with whatever you find used or at the library. Used can be difficult. Pratchett is one of those authors people keep rather than sell... -

Re: THUD!
Sun, May 7, 2006 - 10:00 PMHaving finally been dragged into reading Pratchett, I've started at the beginning - "The Color of Magic", and "The Light Fantastic". (I actually read "The Monstrous Regiment" first, but that's not relevant now.) They're both good books, but really, they're two parts of the same story. "Light Fantastic" does not stand well on its own - there just isn't enough of the background filled in if you haven't read "The Color of Magic". But they were fun reads. -

Fri, June 12, 2009 - 6:17 AMJust re-read Thud. Definitely one of my favorites, although Night Watch is still my favorite Discworld novel. I have a heavy bias towards the guards books though.
