So they only pull things in that get close enough to that center. (cross the event horizon) If our sun was a black hole of the same mass, it would have the same gravitation influence that it does now, but anything that was within the event horizon would fall towards the center instead of continuing to orbit. As far as the evaporating thing, that is really tricky and difficult to explain even if you understand quantum mechanics, but cheap lie is that black holes are not entirely black do emit some thermal energy known as Hawking radiation. That energy emission corresponds with a loss in mass which means the black hole is shrinking, maybe. Hawking radiation has never been observed.
