A good weekend read. I wouldn't say a great though.
By the same author that wrote No Country For Oldmen.
It's a father and his young son's struggle to survive in post acpocalypic America.
It's tender and sad and horrifying.
To me the real story is the interplay between father and son.

I thought this was a fairly good book. I don't know that I would recommend it. The part that took place in the basement was almost too much for me to handle.

A movie? Eek. It'll take a brave filmmaker to retain the feel of this book intact.

Though Dead Man comes to mind. Sparse dialog and bleak palette, punctuated with shocking action. Inescapable ending.
Powerfully grim but not entirely devastating.

It was okay. Well written, and the dynamic between father and son was very realistic and poignant, but what is it with apocalypse and road trips? I don't know how many apocalyptic novels I've read that center around a nightmarish road trip.

i thoroughly enjoyed this novel... super quick read... it won the pulitzer prize for fiction in 2006... i liked THE ROAD mostly for the visuals.. it's a raw end of times story, where there is no hope:

a father with his little boy walking on a road; post apocalyptic fallout; what little sunlight there is is shrouded by the constant falling of ashes, total anarchy; the new currency is human flesh; when they can't fuck their sex slaves anymore they eat them; there are no more children except his son...

    enjoy the day,

A friend kept mentioning this book. It's not the type of book I like, but once I started this book, I finished it in a few hours. I shed a tear by page 10. Yes, It tells the journey of a father and son in a post-apocalyptic world. Yes, the world is a terrible placeand people are doing awful things to each other, and Yes their situation is hopeless, and yet the book gives hope and tugs at the heart strings and shows that even in the face of evil...goodness and kindness can survive if we chose to let it.

McCarthy's best - the writing is taut and the psychology is just always ripping me apart. There is no way a film is going to do this book. McCarthy is all about language inside the head. No Country as a film did not even come close to the tension within the book. The Road will be paler on film as well most probably.

I'm reading this now. After reading the reviews on Amazon I decided to pick it up. If I would have read the comments here first I might not have. lol. I'm a handful of pages in now, and am having a hard time finding the author's rhythm. But I remain inspired to forge ahead. So far there's no other life. No wood. Lot's of ash. It's cold. ;-)

I hate to tell you this, but The Road is not a work of fiction.

What do you think it was based on?

The answers that Ledan has, you don't really want to know.

As good as the book is, I'd want to watch the film. Some scenes I recall from the book still get to me,so much so I'm not sure I'd want to see it.But it perhaps what is what make it good because it is so unnerving and uncomfortable.I'm curious on how Ledan would answer that question however...

Al-Keetab is the ancient vampire book of the dead. It is our equivalent of a bible or holy book, though the analogy of holy book is a poor one.

Almost every image and scene of The Road is taken from Al-Keetab.

Cormac McCarthy must have come across a copy. A copy can be obtained only by the death or killing of a vampire.

He will be questioned. If he came upon it by innocent means, the book will be taken from him. If he came upon by taking it from a vampire, he will be eaten.

It sure falls squarely in the Negative Utopia camp,
so it has plenty of company among visions that have come true.

I very much enjoyed it, but dystopian sci-fi is usually my favorite genre.

          I read it last night.

          It was okay. Different.
The language he used was sometimes frustrating...sometimes poetic.

Not sure I would classify it as sci-fi though... very little science in it.
More like some weird stream of conscious psychological, mythological thingy?
          I dunno.

I enjoyed it more when I quit comparing it to hard sci-fi
and just settled in to reading the somewhat mind numbing
dialog and atmosphere and mood stuff.

          Dont leave me.
          I wont.
          I mean ever.
          I know.
          Okay?
          okay.
          I mean ever ever.
          I heard you.
          okay?
          okay.
Im scared I think we should leave.
          Not yet.
          But I'm really scared.
          Okay.
          Okay?
          okay
Did you just say okay to make me happy?
I said okay because Im about to rape and eat you myself if you keep up this inane dialog.

I certainly did enjoy being able to pour
myself a glass of water and eat a leftover
          hamburger midway through.
