Hey, let me give you the pat you on the back, Snert. That is awesome that you regularly support the ACLU and have been for so long. You do deserve a pat on the back.

The ACLU gets a lot of abuse. Many people do not understand that the organization is devoted to the principles of liberty, and not to any particular cause. Thus, if liberties are at stake, they defend those liberties, even if the specific people they happen to be defending in that case are unpopular people or even bad people.

Thus, if the government tries to illegally censor the KKK, the ACLU will support the KKK's right to free speech. It is not because they believe in the KKK or agree with what the KKK has to say, far from up. But to defend this liberty, the right of free speech, means they have to defend the principle no matter who is making the speech.

There was one ACLU lawyer who was black and who successfully defended the KKK when the FBI tried to get the KKK's membership list. The membership list is protected by the right of privacy.

That was a moment in irony, for a black ACLU lawyer to defend the KKK --- and for the KKK to accept his representation. The KKK member who was being defended spoke very highly of his black ACLU lawyer when interviewers asked him how he felt about being represented by a black man.

See, there is hope for the human race.

In Defense of Our America: The Fight For Civil Liberties in the Age of Terror, by Anthony D. Romero and Dina Temple-Raston.

This book is about what the ACLU has been doing since 911 to defend civil liberties that have been eroded by the war on terror.

What impresses me is just how hard the ACLU fights. As you can see from the cases discussed in the book, they don't take the easy cases, and they don't give up. The book gave me a new found admiration for the ACLU and shows they are still very relevant and necessary.

On the negative side, the book is a bit self serving. I get the sense the book was commissioned by the ACLU to promote the organization. That is fine, I support that, but it detracts from the quality of the book. The author is the head of the ACLU, so obviously this book is not an objective account of the ACLU's recent mission.
