Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series by Betty MacDonald
Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes
    Lizard Music by Daniel Pinkwater
My Brother Sam Is Dead by James Lincoln Collier
Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech
    The Witches by Roald Dahl

I could go on and on. Being a children's librarian is a great excuse for me to read and re-read great books for kids!
  • I hesitate to say this, but I find "The Giving Tree" to be such a piece of hooey... is it admirable to live your life for another person, especially a self-obsessed brat of a person who just takes all you give without even watering you?! I firking hate that book -- and I just realized you're the person who thought Beloved "stunk," so this is all starting to make perfect sense.
    • Funny you say that - when I first read TGT, in high school, I thought it was great. Re-reading it a decade later, I think, "wow, that's so codependent and needy!" I think the tree goes too far, or that perhaps it's a better metaphor for a mother's love than a friend or lover's love.
