Re: kids books that grownups should read ( or re-read)
Thu, September 29, 2005 - 3:44 PMThere was this book series about a herd/family line of horses that lived on an island....can't remember the name or author. Anyone?
Where the Sidewalk Ends was my favorite Shel Silverstein but all his stuff is great.
Again, the Serendipity series. It got me through some tough times as a young 'un. -

Re: kids books that grownups should read ( or re-read)
Fri, September 30, 2005 - 6:14 PMI loved her books. I wanted to travel there just to see the horses. The Black Stallion series by Walter Farley I couldn't put down until I read every single one of the books. I thought the movies were disappointing, however.
My two favorite series that I'd like to pick up again sometime are The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper, and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle.

Fri, September 30, 2005 - 10:28 AMI found that in re-reading the Phantom Tollbooth, I was disappointed. I LOVED it as a kid, read is over and over, but this time... I don't know. Maybe i read it too much before. But it's a great book and I would recommend it to anyone.
Especially kids.

Fri, September 30, 2005 - 4:38 PMYes! I loved the Juniper Game and Wise Child was excellent.
There's a youth fiction novel called Pageant (don't remember the author though) completely different subject matter than Juniper but they jarred my memory. Good stuff. -

Re: kids books that grownups should read ( or re-read)
Sat, October 1, 2005 - 1:27 AMThis isn't a kids book, but if you read 'Catcher in the Rye' as a teenager, it's quite interesting to read it again later on. I first read it when I was fifteen, and remember feeling a literary friendship with Holden. When I read it again as an 'adult', I experienced a kind of literary nostalgia. I don't know if that makes any sense. Whatever, nevermind. -

Re: kids books that grownups should read ( or re-read)
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 9:38 PMI couldn't stand Catcher in the Rye.. a lot of my friends related to Holden, but I thought he was just a whiny brat...
My 12 year old cousin is reading A Wrinkle In Time and absolutely loves it - I haven't read it in years but will have to pick it up again..
Also, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is fantastic - I just recently re-read it!

Re: kids books that grownups should read ( or re-read)
Mon, October 3, 2005 - 11:28 AMI hesitate to say this, but I find "The Giving Tree" to be such a piece of hooey... is it admirable to live your life for another person, especially a self-obsessed brat of a person who just takes all you give without even watering you?! I firking hate that book -- and I just realized you're the person who thought Beloved "stunk," so this is all starting to make perfect sense. -

Re: kids books that grownups should read ( or re-read)
Tue, October 4, 2005 - 7:52 PMFunny you say that - when I first read TGT, in high school, I thought it was great. Re-reading it a decade later, I think, "wow, that's so codependent and needy!" I think the tree goes too far, or that perhaps it's a better metaphor for a mother's love than a friend or lover's love.

Thu, October 6, 2005 - 6:30 PMThe Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spy Glass. A "kids" trilogy that encompasses magic, angels, witches, armoured polar bears, mult-universes and along the way the little heroine travels through Limbo freeing the dead there, finds her soulmate and partakes in a battle to over throw God while becoming the next Eve.
Tore through these in record time and kept asking myself "this is for kids?" every couple of chapters.
